One of drawbacks to a Blog site layout is that it can be easy for good content to get buried and go unnoticed. I try to get around this by keeping the Popular Posts section up to date, highlighting both the last months most popular content alongside my all time most popular posts. What about all the stuff in between though? Well I’ve now simplified and organized all my post categories, which you can see on the right hand menu widget on the blog. I hope this will improve your experience of the site and maybe even introduce you to some content you’ve yet to enjoy.

Here’s your weekly roundup of SQL Server Blog Posts, News and Techie Stuff. Enjoy!

The BIG news on the block this week is that the PASS Summit 2013 will be held in Charlotte NC. For the last 5 years it has been Seattle that has played host. You can find out more about the announcement on the PASS Blog. As with any decision that the PASS Board makes, there have been mixed opinions on the decision. Personally I think it’s a great step forward that will provide an opportunity for PASS to reach out to and interact with a different area of the SQL community.

I’m delighted to share with you the fantastic news that this week saw the start of a new SQL Server User Group here in the UK. It’s brilliant to see our community growing from strength to strength but what really makes this a great story is that the group was brought to life single-handedly through some serious hard work and grit on the part of Jonathan Allen (Blog|Twitter). Congratulations to SQL South West! If you are a Data Professional in and around the South West area then now is the time for you to get involved and be there at the start of something great. It’s also one of Your Techie Resolutions for this year.

  • Job security, loyalty, and employee retention: you need to take control – An interesting look at the state of play in our market, courtesy of Paul Randal (Blog|Twitter). I find these discussions fascinating as I am forever hearing of the lack of quality Data Professionals available and yet I bizarrely know of a great many personally. Perhaps this has something to do with the clear disconnect caused by the fact that the so many recruiters are clueless to the requirements of the profession they are recruiting for. I’m often called in on consulting engagements to address this disconnect and support the hiring process for clients.
  • SQL Azure Cost – It’s all about the money this week for Grant Fritchey (Blog|Twitter). No I’m not referring to the man’s recent career movements but instead to the important cloud technology consideration of cost. Read on to find out more.
  • Leadership and Mentoring – More excellent professional development content for the Data Professional this week brought to us by Erin Stellato (Blog|Twitter). This is an emotional last SFTW post that I will be sharing with you from my twenties. For on Monday 21st March (also the first day of Spring here in the UK) is my 30th Birthday. You may be familiar with the peculiar tradition we have here in our UK working culture of the Birthday boy/girl buying treats for all their colleagues, surely the wrong way around to be doing things. So whilst I will be fattening up my work chums on Krispy Kreme Doughnuts it seems only fitting that I give a gift to you dear reader too. So on Monday I will post another SQL Crossword for you to puzzle over. Previously (here and here) these have proved to be a big hit and you know I believe in giving the people what they want. Enjoy and have a great weekend!

No prizes (literally) for guessing what the biggest technology news of the week is. Yes it’s all about iPad 2. You can get the low-down on all the latest technology news, that is actually worth knowing about, in the Misc Technology Posts section below. Oh and in case you were wondering it is indeed my Birthday this month, thanks in advance.

This week I was fortunate enough to share a fantastic evening with the folks from the London SQL Server User Group. Neil Hambly (Blog|Twitter) and Dave Ballantyne (Blog|Twitter) were our hosts serving up the SQL content for the evening and both were dishing out performance tuning wisdom like it was going out of fashion with their respective presentations on “XQuery fundamentals” and  ”re-engineering for faster performance”. In attendance were a good selection of the Twitterati including Gavin Payne (Blog|Twitter) and James Boother (Blog|Twitter) to mention but a few. It was without a doubt a great event and for those of you that could not make it you missed out on a real treat let me tell you. Get in on the fun and make sure you get yourself along to your next local SQL Server User Group event, remember it’s one of your resolutions (Techie Resolutions for You, Not Me) for the year.

I recently received a goody bag, along with an award from those really nice folk at Quest Software and I have to say I’m chuffed to bits. I want to say a humongous thank you to Quest and Ian Kick(@iainkick) at SQL Server Pedia, as well as each and every one of you that voted for me. This was the first year the competition ran and I think it’s a fantastic way to grow our community. You guys are the reason I write, blog and share all things SQL Server and your support really means a great deal to me so thank you!  In case you missed it first time around here’s our winning post in the Professional Development category 10 Character Traits of Outstanding DBA’s.
