As John is STILL away on his well earned vacation and most likely getting up to some type of mischief or another, I will once again be your illustrious {stand-in} host.  For those of you that don’t know me as yet my name’s Neil Hambly and I’m just another one of those SQL Server geeks, who spends his waking moments either working with, thinking about or in my case trying to learn some aspect of SQL Server – aside from that I occasionally sleep and I’m a normal balanced human being {hey NO laughing @ the back}

Here’s your weekly roundup of SQL Server Blog Posts, News and Techie Stuff. Enjoy!

  • SQLRelay  This follows hotly on the heels of the SQLBits 9 conference, it is a week of regional SQL User group events, with a finale in London and some just awesome prizes

  • Books, Books and More Books – I know of a number of SQL related Books having become available recently (or I have had the chance to obtain a copy of)
  • MVP Deep Dives 2 – now available on Pre-order and will be launched @ SQLPASS I believe and some signings by many MVP Authors (Can hardly wait to get my hands on one of these)
  • Pinal Dave with his Wait Stats Joes 2 Pros: SQL Performance Tuning Techniques Using Wait Statistics, Types & Queues I haven’t read this.. but awaiting its delivery and it looks like a great book
  • Inside SQL Server Query Optimizer (Benjamin Nevarez) ..One I have started reading and I will be doing a review of (expect this to be sometime around when SQLPASS is on)
  • SQL Server Hardware (Glenn Berry)

Every DBA needs a vacation (How to Raise Your Game By Doing Nothing) and I’m most certainly no exception to the rule. In the not too distant future I will be taking my leave of you for a short while, meaning there will be no weekly post for you to enjoy. Fear not however, for I shall of course return.

As is often the case in life, with misfortune also comes opportunity for those who are prepared to see it and brave enough to take it. So whilst I’m away I would be delighted for one of you to take the SFTW baton from my hand and play host for a week or two. You might want stick with the existing format or even add your own spin on it. It’s your call and opportunity to shine.

I’m delighted to announce that next week UK SQL Server community champion and speaker Neil Hambly(Blog|Twitter) will be your host! I’m really looking forward to seeing what content Neil chooses to share with us and hope that you will make him feel welcome here. There’s one more host slot up for grabs the following week so drop me an email if you’re interested.

There is a tremendous amount of UK SQL community action coming up in the next few months. So much so in fact that it requires an entire post of it’s own. Watch this space for more details soon…

Is it just me or does there seem to be a bit of SQL MCM fever in the air this week? There’s certainly more chatter going on, what with Hangouts cropping up on Google providing folks the opportunity to get involved in study groups. Not to mention everyone’s favourite rock star (apart from Bryan Adams) is halfway up mount MCM already, as Thomas Larock (Blog|Twitter) shares his story this week in Call Me Mini-Master. A hat tip to you my good sir.

Needless to say he’s in good company ;-) as I also took the opportunity whilst on a recent trip to Seattle to try my hand at the MCM Knowledge Exam. I was originally planning on keeping my cards close to my chest about the whole thing but then I thought that sharing my story here may actually just give me (and maybe some others too) the proverbial kick up the backside to get on with it already. Were the recent opportunity not to have presented itself I would still be faffing about and procrastinating about the whole thing. Sometimes you just have to go for it and on this occasion I’m certainly pleased I did. Next stop, Lab Exam……..

It’s SQL In The City today right here in London town and I’m feeling well and truly gutted that I cannot be there to enjoy what will no doubt be a fantastic SQL community event in my home town. Those generous folks from RedGate will be putting on a second SQL In The City event later in the year, this time to be held in Los Angeles, so if that’s in your neck of the woods be sure to get involved.

Three of our very own UK SQL Server speakers [Neil Hambly(Blog|Twitter), Jen Stirrup (Blog|Twitter) and Chris Webb(Blog|Twitter)] need your support in their bid to present at the PASS Summit this year. These guys do an incredible amount for the SQL community here in the UK and in my view they thoroughly deserve the opportunity to speak at PASS.  You can give them your support by voting for them in the Community Choice sessions!

This week I had the opportunity to work on an interesting SQL Server reporting solution. The environment in question was using a combination of Database Mirroring and Database Snapshots in order to offload reporting from the Principle database/server. The Snapshot was being refreshed every 10 minutes however the refresh cycle was experiencing delay (for a variety of reasons) during which time user connectivity was unavailable to the Snapshot because it essentially did not exist. Rather than go into more details here (I’ll save those for a separate post) I’ll skip straight to the solution, which was to create a pointer database using Synonyms to reference the most recent Snapshot. This permitted the switch between Snapshots to be transparent to the connections of the reporting application. I developed the solution by building upon something similar from a post written by the SQLCAT team. I extended/modified the code in order to support Database Mirroring. I’ll be sure to share the details of how I did this with you in a future post but for now I thought I would bring the post by SQLCAT your attention. I had not seen or considered this type of solution previously and so thought it may be of interest to you too.

This weeks post comes to you live from the SQLskills Immersion Event in London. It’s been a fantastic week jam packed full with learning SQL Server Internals and Performance, although technically right this moment I’m currently slacking in the middle of class so I had better get back to it before I’m caught out. You see the risks I take for you readers! I’ve acquired a mountain of great knowledge to takeaway and put to work back at the office. I’ll be sure to share more in the coming weeks. In the mean time……

One of drawbacks to a Blog site layout is that it can be easy for good content to get buried and go unnoticed. I try to get around this by keeping the Popular Posts section up to date, highlighting both the last months most popular content alongside my all time most popular posts. What about all the stuff in between though? Well I’ve now simplified and organized all my post categories, which you can see on the right hand menu widget on the blog. I hope this will improve your experience of the site and maybe even introduce you to some content you’ve yet to enjoy.
